There are several ways to become a US citizen, including by birth, naturalization, or being the child of citizens.
Permanent residents (Green Card holders) who have lived in the country for at least 5 years, or 3 years if married to a citizen. Members of the military and their close relatives also qualify.
All children born in the United States are citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status, though there are diplomatic exceptions. This is protected by the 14th Amendment.
Naturalization allows foreign to obtain US citizenship. Applicants must be over 18, live in the USCIS district for at least 3 months, and meet other specific requirements.
Children under 18 whose parents naturalize can also automatically obtain citizenship, if they live with their parents and are permanent residents.
